Live Updates On Donald J. Trump Federal Special Counsel Investigation

Is The Counterintelligence Investigation Into Trump Still Going?

In this [interview]( with Rachel Maddow, Congressman Jim Himes made some interesting assertions about the counterintelligence investigation into Trump, starting at around 4:00.

He stated that often the intelligence community won’t charge a counterintelligence target, because greater value for national security can be obtained from simply continuing to investigate.

This raises the question for me, did the counterintelligence investigation that Mueller was overseeing end, or was it simply handed off? The Mueller report contains virtually nothing on the counterintelligence investigation, and in fact seems to purposely conceal information around Flynn and several other topics.

If it is still ongoing, that would explain why Mueller provided so few answers to the fundamental counterintelligence questions in the investigation. Instead he focused on the easily provable obstruction, and stayed silent on so many vital points.

  1. It was thought to be on-going. However, Schiff says he stopped getting briefings on it.

    >House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif., says his panel has not been briefed on the counterintelligence operation in nearly two years and is taking action to find out the probe’s status.
“We don’t know what happened to the counterintelligence investigation that James Comey opened,” he said in an interview with the Washington Post

    >Asked if there is any reason to believe the probe has been closed, Schiff said, “You know, I have not been able to get clarity on that. We have been seeking to get it, to get an answer from the Justice Department, from the counterintelligence division at the FBI, and we don’t have clarity, which is concerning.”

That’s one reason why the House Intelligence Committee subpoenaed the Mueller’s counterintelligence evidence. Which, by the way, the DOJ has *started* complying with in part.

Edit: Someone on Twitter (not a random person, but a national security expert who I can’t remember) speculated that maybe the House Intelligence Committee stopped getting Intel briefings because the FBI decided Nunes can’t be trusted… Remember, just speculation. It might have been Marcy Wheeler but don’t hold me to that.
