  2. What does the treaty do? It’s intended to prevent medium-range missiles from being developed and deployed. Russia has been violating it.

    Why is this missile type dangerous? Mostly, the concern is that they take much less time to arrive on target, meaning that a nation who believed they were under attack by an intermediate-range weapon would have less time to evaluate the situation and respond, increasing the chances that they will incorrectly interpret what they see and respond with, oh, a full volley of nuclear missiles. A ballistic missile going 500 km would quite literally take seconds to reach its target—and to sensors, wouldn’t look any different from a commonplace Scud missile with a conventional payload.
